Craps Basics

Craps is one of the most widely played casino games both at land based and online casinos. It is a very complicated game and purely luck based. The craps game is developed from an Old English game named hazard.

Craps is basically a gambling game played with two dice.  The main aim of the players in the game is to guess the outcome of the roll of the dice. A first throw of 7 or 11 wins the game and a first throw of 2, 3, or 12 loses the game and a first throw of any other number is repeated to win before a 7 is thrown, which otherwise loses the bet.

The craps table is run by four casino members: a box man who monitors the playing chips, dealers and the players; two dealers who collects and pay bets to the winners; and a stickman who announces the results of each dice roll and collects the dice.

In the game of craps, the player rolling the dice is called the shooter and first throw of the dice is called the Come out Roll. If the player throws a 7 or 11 on the first roll he wins and this is called a ‘natural’.  If on the first roll the player throws a 2, 3 or a 12, it s called craps, and the player loses.  The shooter goes on rolling until he makes a ‘seven out’.

Craps Variations

Bank craps, a variation of craps game, is also known as Las Vegas Craps. It uses a special table layout and all bets are made against the house. In Bank Craps, the dice are thrown over a wire that is normally stretched a few inches from the table’s surface. The overall house edge is around 1.4%.

Crapless Craps, also known as Bastard Craps is a simpler version of the craps game, and is played as an online private game. In this game a player bets on rolling a 2, 3, 11 or 12 before a 7 is thrown. In crapless craps, 2 and 12 have odds of 11:2 and have a house edge of 7.143% while 3 and 11 have odds of 11:4 with a house edge of 6.25%.

Die Rich Craps, also known as Open Craps or Money Craps is a recent version of the craps game, and is played using a single dice. The book keeps a percentage of the total amount of money wagered usually 5%-7%. The craps table in this variant consists of a Win Line, Lose Line, and box numbers of 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10.

High Point Craps is another version of the craps game. In this variation, the initial roll of a 2 or a 3 is ignored. If a player rolls 11 or 12, the player wins. Any other total rolled, is considered as 1 point and the player rolls again. The house edge in this craps variation is about 2.35%.

New York Craps is another variation of craps. In this craps variation, the house edge is greater than Las Vegas Craps or Bank craps. The table layout is also different, and is called a double-end-dealer table. This game doesn’t offer Come or Don’t Come bets. The overall house edge in New York craps is 5%.
